Obituary of James H. Wood

James H. Wood Himrod: James H. Wood, age 92, of Himrod, NY died unexpectedly on Wednesday December 20, 2017 at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Penn Yan, NY. Honoring his wishes there are no prior calling hours. A private graveside memorial service with Military Honors will be held in Grove Mount Cemetery, Himrod, NY with Pastor Adam Hunt officiating, at the convenience of the family. James was born Dec. 7, 1925 in the town of Catherine, NY, a son of the late Francis and Edna {Searles} Wood. He graduated from Odessa-Montour High School in 1944. He immediately joined the U. S. Army and served 3 years during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. On Aug. 3, 1947 in Montour Falls he married his high school sweetheart the former Sally J. Randall. A Dairy Farmer he moved to Himrod from Horseheads in 1955, owning and operating Sprout Hill Farm, which even at 92 as a consultant he supervised the family operation from his favorite window. An active member of the community, Mr. Wood attended the Waneta Lake Baptist Chapel, was a former board member of Agway in Dundee, a former volunteer of the Penn Yan Ambulance Corp.; over 50 year member of the N.Y. Holstein Assoc.; and member of the Dundee V.F.W. and American Legion. He lived and breathed farming, and enjoyed hunting in the fall. He is dearly loved and will be forever missed by his wife of 70 years Sally J. Wood at home; 5 children, Alleine J. (Chuck) Miller of Freeville, NY, Warren A. (Ann) Wood of Himrod, Bruce A. (Teri) Wood of Cortland, NY, Annie E. (Richard) Meyer of Geneva, and Robert A. Wood of Jacksonville, FL; 19 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; a sister Verma Mae McClary of Cayuta, NY; a brother Paul E. (Lillian) Wood of Jordan, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Gladys Kimble of Horseheads, NY.
