Mary Rosetta 'Rose' Howell Penn Yan: Mary Rosetta 'Rose' Howell, age 88, formerly of Dundee and Rock Stream, passed away Monday November 13, 2023 at The Homestead, in Penn Yan, N.Y. Honoring her wishes there are no prior calling hours. Graveside service and Celebration of Her Life will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date yet to be determined. Inurnment will be in Tyrone Union Cemetery, Tyrone, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to either, the Dundee Fire Company, or Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, NY 14837. Mary was born January 5, 1935 in Alfred Station, NY, the daughter of the late William Franklin and Margaret Angelee (Dodge) Davis. She graduated from Andover Central School in Andover, NY, a member of the class of 1953. On Dec. 17, 1954 in Andover, she married James L. Howell. They lived in Boliver and then Allentown, NY from 1954 to 1968. A loving housewife, and mother, she devoted her younger years to raising her 4 children, as 3 boys were hard to control with two hands. Upon moving to Yates County and with the kids in school, she became very active outside the home. 'Rose' as she was better known, was a "Jack of Many Trades" she worked in the vineyards, installed wallpaper, was a Bar Steward, and head of the Kitchen of the Dundee American Legion for many years, including Rotary Club lunches every Wednesday at noon. Later in life she was happy as the Receptionist, and Hostess at Glenora Winery. Mrs. Howell was a very active and devoted member of the Auxiliary of the American Legion Bradley-Jessop Post #660, and then the Penn Yan American Legion Johnson-Costello Post 355, she was a Life Member of the V.F.W. Goodrich-Smith Post #8649 Auxiliary, a member of the Penn Yan, Ladies of The Moose Lodge, and the Seneca Lake Duck Hunters Club. In what little spare time she had, she enjoyed knitting, crochet, crafts, flowers, jigsaw puzzles, word search and of course her grandchildren. She is loved and will be missed by a daughter Catherine E. (Richard) Seeley of Lansing, NY; 3 sons Douglas J. (Kim Davenport) Howell, Jerald R. (Lynette) Howell, and Andrew C. (Stacey Cohick) Howell all of Dundee; 5 grandchildren Richard F. (Jeannessa) Howell of Abilene, TX, Ryan M. McCurry of NYC, NY, Nicholas C. McCurry of Boca Raton, FL, Leigh M. (Derek) Battin of Penn Yan, and Taylor E. Howell of Dundee; 6 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, "Big Jim" Howell in 2010; and 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
