Joanne was such a beautiful loving person. A great mother in law grandmother. I’ll never forget how excited she was to have a grandson. I’m happy I made that come true for her. She will be dearly missed I always loved her.

P Joanne Martz is my father's sister. I love, honor, and respect her very much. One of the many privileges about growing up in my family is our closeness. I'm not sure one week went by when "we kids" (all of Grandma and Grandpa Barr's grandkids) didn't visit with aunts, uncles, and cousins. This was true on my mother's side of the family, as well, the Conley's. I grew up believing that my aunts and uncles had as much authority over us kids as our own parents did. We spent the major holidays together, we had family reunions or family meals at each others' houses, we went out to special events together. They played with us (games, cards, music, dancing, etc), they scolded us when we got out of line, and they loved us. We loved them right back.
I went into the Army in January of 1976. Aunt Joanne asked me if she could send me cookies, and I said but of course!!! I mean, have you ever tasted her baked goods? I'd be nuts to say no!! She asked how many I needed, and I said six dozen. "WHAT???" she exclaimed. "Did you say six dozen?" I replied that's what I said. In my mind six dozen cookies of the chocolate chip kind were pretty small, maybe the size of a half dollar. In my immediate family of 10 they had to be small so that each of us could have a cookie or two. I knew that one small bag of chocolate chips made six dozen cookies in our household. I knew that because I made them occasionally. Well, in her smaller household of only four men, two of whom I know loved her baked goods, her cookies were, oh, just a little bit larger! Where I could make 72 cookies out of a small bag of chocolate chips, she might make about 30. The thing about basic training is that if someone sent us some goodies, we had to share it with everyone in our unit. There were about 60 girls in my unit, so I was thinking small cookies, and I was thinking I would get the lion's share! Oh the conversation we had over those cookies. I begged her to make them smaller, and she did. And she sent them. And by the time they made it to my mailroom, they had gone stale.
The year that my father died in 2005, she, Aunt Jane, Uncle Keith and Aunt Sandy came down here to the borderlands in SE Arizona for a visit. She and Aunt Jane stayed here with me and my then husband, Enrique, at my house. This was in February or March, so it was still pretty chilly here. Well, I got up one morning and she and Aunt Jane are sitting in my Arizona room (at that time a screened in room) in their nightgowns and housecoats. It was cold. And they were shivering! I asked them where the hell did they think they were? Arizona? And we all broke out laughing. I brought them out blankets to wrap up in. I brought Aunt Jane some coffee, and Aunt Joanne just wanted some hot tea. They left to go to my parents' home about three miles from where I live. Aunt Joanne was driving. I know I gave them explicit directions! LOL! Anyhow, they got lost, made three trips around the same block, just going in different directions. Once they passed Chili's restaurant for the THIRD time, they got to laughing so hard they had to stop. They called me to tell me they were lost. It is a memory that always came up whenever we talked about their trip here to my home.
My husband at the time was Mexican. His English, though passable, was still strongly accented. It's hard to make the "w" sound in Spanish. As a matter of fact, there is no "w" sound in Spanish as we know it. It's more like a "gwa" sound. When referring to Aunt Joanne and Aunt Jane, he'd call them "the gumen." Well they got a huge kick out of that. They would leave notes for us if they were leaving the house and would sign these notes: "The Gumen."
These are just three of the most wonderful memories I have of my dear Aunt Joanne. I have so many more and I could keep typing for a long, long time. Damn I'm sure going to miss her. I'm sending peace to my Uncle Chuck and my cousins CW and Chris. RIP Aunt P Joanne! I will always be one of your most ardent admirers. <3

My Aunt Joanne had a beautiful soul. I will always remember her smile. She was such a great singer and musician. Growing up playing music with her and Uncle Chucky are memories I will always cherish.
